Prague's Stolpersteine: Stumbling Stones

About the Stolpersteine

Stolpersteine are not imposing monuments standing in a town square. They are small memorial stones set in the pavement in front of the house where a person once lived - they were neighbours who were uprooted from their homes by the Nazi regime. You'll find the stones in every neighbourhood in Prague. When we read the engraved names on these 'stumbling stones', it is as though the person has returned to the place they once called home.

Memory begins where we live

Over time, the brass plaque loses its shine; dust and dirt from the street cover the engraved names, and they become unreadable. And a memory can disappear as quietly as the people these stones commemorate once disappeared.

Now, they need good neighbours to take care of them from time to time. As a Patron, all you need to do is stop and clean the stone from time to time, restoring its shine to remind those passing that once; Here lived....

You can find Stolpersteine in your area on our interactive map, and choose one to adopt. Just visit the stone occasionally - perhaps on the person's birthday or on other important days, such as Yom HaShoah - and clean the stone so that the name remains visible to everyone who passes by.
